How To Display Full Email Header Information

Summary: Technical support staff will sometimes ask you to provide full email header information when you contact us with certain problems, questions or requests. Use the instructions below to display full headers in your email software.


A full email header looks something like the example below:

Return-Path: someone@auzzie.biz
Delivered-To: somebody@auzzie.biz
Received: (qmail 28233 invoked from network); 25 Jun 2006 13:03:54 -0000
Received: (mailwasher server; message accepted); 25 Jun 2006 23:03:54 +1000
Received: from mail.lisp.com.au (203.21.133.123) by auzzie.biz with SMTP; 25 Jun 2006 13:03:51 -0000
Received: (qmail 10661 invoked from network); 25 Jun 2006 13:04:48 -0000

How to display Full Headers

Webmail

  1. Display the message.
  2. Click the View Full Header link in the Option field at the top.
  3. Copy the Full Header information. Click the View message link to return to the message.
  4. Forward the message to the appropriate group. You will need to paste the full header information into the message body.

Eudora

  1. Display the message.
  2. In the upper left corner of the message window, click on the Blah Blah Blah icon.
  3. With full headers displayed, forward the message to the appropriate group(s).

Outlook 2002/XP

  1. Right-click the message. In the Options menu, click Internet Headers
  2. Copy and paste everything from this window into the message you are forwarding to the appropriate group(s).

Mail.app (Mac OS X 10.2 and later)

  1. Display the message.
  2. Under the View menu, select Message, then Long Header.
  3. With the full headers displayed, forward the message to the appropriate group(s)

Pine

  1. Display the message.
  2. Press H.
  3. With full headers displayed, forward the message to the appropriate group(s).

Outlook Express

  1. Click the email message
  2. Click the "File" menu
  3. Click "Properties"
  4. Click the "Details" tab
  5. Click "Message Source"
  6. Copy and paste everything from this window into the message you are forwarding to the appropriate group(s).

If you believe the email you've received is of serious nature and should be reported to Security Services, then highlight the full header text in the box and press the Ctrl key and the 'c' key simultaneously on your keyboard in Windows or the Cmd key and the 'c' for Mac OS. This will copy the text to the clipboard. Open a new mail message and place cursor in the body of the message. Press Ctrl key and the 'v' key simultaneously or the Cmd key and 'v' for Mac OS to paste the headers. Send the new message to webmaster@auzzie.biz and indicate the nature of the email.
